Annemarie Klaasse of eLEAF just returned from a visit to the sugarcane fields of South Karnataka, India. Ground water exhaustion is threatening the income of millions of Indian sugar cane farmers and the future of the sugar industry. Funded by the Sustainable Water Fund, a consortium under the leadership of the Solidaridad Network is presenting good practices and solutions to increase productivity and income whilst saving water.

At field level, the partnering sugar mills measure soil moisture and applied irrigation water, while eLEAF measures production and water consumption from space. Regular updates from our innovative satellite monitoring system will assist the mills in their daily operations, and will hopefully allow us to see the impact of these newly introduced good practices by satellite.
